History of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer, which is caused due to the exposure to asbestos. People who are exposed to asbestos are supposed to be affected by this disease. Asbestos is not new to us. But the use of asbestos increases after the Second World War. Asbestos is a useful material and used for different industries. Starting from cement to flooring product asbestos has many other uses. In the beginning we did not have any knowledge of its malignancy. People were engaged in such industry without any inhibition. In the initial stage the case of mesothelioma remained unreported. The first lawsuit was brought against the owner of an asbestos manufacturing company in 1929. But the case of mesothelioma again came to the front, when Wagner makes highlight the disease by writing an article. He establishes that the main source of this disease is asbestos. In the same article, Wagner referred some case studies in which he showed how some workers of South Africa suffered from mesothelioma. In 1962, McNulty, an eminent journalist first reported a case of an Australian, who was diagnosed mesothleioma. He had worked in mines of asbestos in Wittenoom. The ware of the mine was used to cover schoolyards, but it did not affect any one. So a British journalist contradicted directly, the asbestos factor of mesothelioma. The media game went on for sometime. In the year 1974, in an Australian magazine a public warning was issued on the use of blue asbestos. The most important step was taken by the Australian government in the year 1978 to phase out the mine township of Wittenoom. The incidence of mesothelioma, though not significant, but the health experts of USA has warned that, it may rise in the near future.
